PVRC members are helping grow an amateur radio community in Malawi from the ground up. Don Jones K6ZO (7Q6M) and Bill Perkins KC4D (7Q7WW) together have been instrumental in establishing STEM and Amateur Radio education in Malawi. They have also been involved in other humanitarian efforts in the country. In 2024 they established the Jeffrey Dahn Foundation, honoring Jeff Dahn, KB3ZUK, to further their efforts. The Foundation helps newly licensed youngsters with school and tuition fees for secondary school and university.
To date they have licensed 24 new Amateur Radio operators in Malawi and have established the Malawi Amateur Radio Society which will become an IARU member later this year. The HQ station, 7Q0HQ, will be located in an abandoned cellular site, donated by CCAP Church in Embangweni. It will also become a learning center.
Don’s effort this Summer is to ship a 20ft sea container full of donations from Baltimore to Malawi. He is looking for towers, aluminum tubing, antennas, transceivers, amplifiers, hardline, coax, computers, ham radio accessories, and donations to help cover the cost of shipping the container. Don’s future efforts include expanding to Uganda and Comoros.
Please contact Don Jones at [email protected] if you have anything to donate. Monetary donations may be made online at https://dahnfoundation.org or by mail to
