That's 44 so far, a real good start. The annual Christmas
Dinner has been set for Monday, December 11 beginning at 6
PM, dinner at 7 PM (for an estimated 45 to 75 people) at the
Olive Garden on Rt. 7 in Vienna, VA, west of the 495
Beltway. This is the same location where the dinner has
been enjoyed in recent years. The Olive Garden has always
had an affordable price and has allowed seperate checks in
our past years there.
The 5 million plaques are on order (thanks K3MM), and the
gavels have all been researched and will be awarded (8 of
them).
8TH ANNUAL BEEZER CHRISTMAS DINNER by Bob Lutz, W2BZR
The time is drawing near for the "eighth" annual "Beezer"
Christmas Dinner at Madison's Steak & Seafood (formally the
Cuckoo's Nest), 3333 Olney-Sandy Springs Road (RT 108),
Olney, MD. The date is Wednesday, December 20th with
arrival around 6 PM and dinner at 7 PM. There will be a
cash bar.
The following dishes are $22.00 (except the 16 oz steak)
including tax and tip. Served with tossed salad, baked
potato, coffee or tea, chocolate sunday, apple pie, or
sherbet.

CVCC Meeting Minutes for 10/10/00 by Tom Ogburn, N4ZJ
The meeting opened at 7:30 by President WA4QDM. There were
11 members in attendance.
Treasurer's Report: There is $2200 dollars in the CVCC
account. There is an upcoming $160 contribution to First
Mennonite Church to continue our meeting place for next
year. Those present OK'd this expenditure.
A discussion was held concerning the Constitution and bylaws
as it relates to dues and membership issues. N4ZJ passed
out copies of the current Constitution. The Constitution
allows for setting the dues structure in April, and some
issues related to that will be brought up again in the first
part of the year.
Also in new business, we discussed our preferences for the
location of the Christmas dinner. Dinner committee
chairperson W4ML is out of the country and our decision will
be passed on to him.
The suggestion was made by KC4AUF to go to the Bull and Bear
as Jim had suggested. This was seconded by several others
and the motion was voted on and passed.
W4NM, A.J., was presented a certificate from the 2000
Virginia QSO Party for second place in Henrico County.
WA4QDM recognized the latest PVRC 5 Million point winners,
W4HJ, W4HZ, W4DR - thanks guys, for your significant help to
PVRC in the contesting effort!
We also voted not to have a table at this years Frostfest.
W4MYA issued his invitation to one and all to come to
Goochland for CQWW Phone.
There was also an issue brought up to consider starting the
meetings at 7pm instead of 7:30. This issue was tabled
until further discussions were possible.
WA4QDM treated us to a fine presentation of some of the QRP
kits available.
PVRC ES MEETING 10/27/00 by Dallas Carter, W3PP
The Eastern Shore meeting was held at W3PP's and opened by
Dallas at 7:00 pm who welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Members present were W3PP, NW3Y, N6ZO, W3OR, N3KW, K3FT, and
N3HUV. Visitors were AB1P, AA1K, N3PT, JG7AMD, and KA3OBV.
A few Lawyer jokes followed from W3PP and Chick NW3Y.
Everyone commented on happenings at their home stations.
Ron, W3OR talked about the lightning strikes that he
suffered this summer. They took out everything.
Chuck, K3FT is getting ready to move into new digs. He is
busy measuring the perimeter of the house and property and
designing stealth antennas to avoid restriction critics.
Chet, N6ZO entertained the group with the description of the
AB-105 that almost would up in his "pool under
construction". Still not resolved, and I think this is
really what spurned the lawyer jokes.
AB1P, Jeanie talked about the new shack (AA1K/AB1P/KB3FEE)
and Jon, AA1K updated the group on tower progress and the
potential for another home style M/M in Delaware.
Al, KA3OBV, new to the neighborhood, has just bought an
FT-1000MP and will be putting up some HF antennas soon. He
also plans to upgrade in early December.
Glenn, N3HUV has just broken ground for an expansion to the
house which will include an exclusive area for the new
shack.
Chick, NW3Y sez he has been working too hard. He still
needs to make needed repairs to his 3 el 40, as the pin has
just about fallen out of the boom.
Yoshi, JG7AMD is working in the northern Virginia area for a
few weeks and is happy to join our effort.
Ed, N3KW sez he still has to get an 80m antenna to be ready
for CW SS. Bob, N3PT just returned from 3 weeks in London
and says it's nice to travel as a tourist instead of a pilot
on business. Bob retired from 35 years as a United Captain
and sez that retirement is great.
Dallas, W3PP thanked all of those that worked so hard this
summer to make the necessary antenna repairs and to install
the new tower adornments.
Contest stratedgy was discussed and it was emphasized that
whereas our UBN rates have fallen over that past two years,
that we still have room to improve. The 3Q penalty in CQWW
makes it all the more important to (#1) make sure you have
the call correct, and (#2) make sure that the station is
working you. All that being said, we dove into a beautiful
roaster chicken that Chick's wife had prepared (thanks Barb,
it was great).
PVRC OTH LUNCH MEETING 11/15/00 by Ben Shave, AA4XU
The PVRC Over-The-Hill Lunch Bunch met in Annandale, VA on
November 15, 2000 for food and discussion at MainStreetUSA
in Annandale, Virginia. The following attended: Jim
Headrick W3CP, Andy Andersen W3XE, Hugh Turnbull W3ABC, Gene
Zimmerman W3ZZ, Bill Leavitt W3AZ, Henry Herman W3UJ, George
Sinclair K6ETM, Ron Uthus N4MO, and Ben Shaver AA4XU.
PVRC SWVA MEETING 11/17/00 by Buddy Smith, W4YE
Our meeting was held at the Western Sizzlin' Steak House in
Roanoke. After extending greetings, Regional Coordinator
John, K4IQ called the meeting to order at 7PM. Present
were: K4IQ, KG9LC, N4EL, N4GU, W4YE, KG6AR, 5B4AFM (N1KH),
and KF4YLH.
At the request of John, three candidates for membership
presented their background.
5B4AFM (N1KH), Stavros, is a senior engineering student at
Va Tech with a EE major. He hopes to continue work toward
an MS degree. He operates from K4KDJ, the Tech club
station.
KF4YLH, Josh is a sophomore at Va Tech and likes contests
and has experience in the VA QSO Party. He has a station
in Blacksburg as well as his home in Covington. He will
operate K4KDJ in contests.
KG6AR, Chris is new to the area and comes to us from the
Southern California DX Club. He has extensive contest
experience from ZF1 where he was on a record setting team a
few years ago. He is also a WAZ checker.
John extended a hearty welcome to KG6AR, 5B4AFM, and KF4YLH.
Having met the requirements for membership, W4YE moved and
N4EL seconded the motion to admit all three to membership.
The motion passed. All three will be valuable new members
of PVRC!
Discussion was held regarding ARRL SS. Mike, N4GU operated
"Q" class and did an outstanding job. A highlight was
working KL7Y in a heavy pile up on 20 cw during SS. He
plans a "B" class effort in the phone SS. W4YE operated "A"
class cw SS with a score of about 104K. It was Buddy's
first SS using computer
logging -it worked.
John asked for show of hands on those planning on SS SSB
activity this week end. Most indicated they would
contribute. Mike noted that in last years VA section
results for the SSB SS, SW VA placed #1 in "A" class, 1, 2,
and 3 in "B". Our smaller chapter does the job!!
John reminded us also of the importance of participating in
the upcoming CQWW DX CW, ARRL 160 & 10 for Club credit, and
plugged the Stu Perry 160 contest as a fun event.
Everyone's schedule being pretty tight, in lieu of a
Christmas dinner meeting, the group decided to meet in early
January. K4IQ will email details soon. John also noted he
will attend the PVRC Central Christmas dinner and will
retrieve any 5 million awards that have been earned to
distribute in our gala January meeting.
Tidbits: N4EL has his tower at 40' now with guys...much
more secure he says. He also reported that QRP does work
DX. At a recent Scouting excursion here in SW VA a QRP rig
worked Russia on 20m SSB.
N4GU will work a single op station in SSB SS but with two
radios in "B" class. KG6AR will operate phone SS from the
Franklin Co. ARC as W4FCR. KF4YLM (Josh) and Stavros 5B4AFM
will work SSB SS from K4KDJ.
K4IQ has a new Yaesu Quadra solid state amp. K1GG still
needs parts for his KLM 40m beam and may have found them
nearby.
The final business was the election of officers. John,
K4IQ was re-elected Coordinator even after a request for a
vote recount! The recount was declared out of order!!
N4GU was surprised to be elected Secretary by a unanimous
vote. No litigation is anticipated in either election.
SW VA Chapter thanks John for his dedication to being our
leader and for all the efforts in supporting PVRC. Meeting
adjourned at 7:45PM.
PVRC NW REGIONAL MEETING 11/21/00 by Ed Steeble, K3IXD,
Chairman
The NW region met at Tully's Grill in Frederick on 21
November 2000, the third Tuesday of the Month. The first
attendees arrived at 5:30, with most coming between 6:00 and
6:30, all for an informal dinner and good
discussions. The meeting began at 7:30. In attendance were
K3IXD, W3ZZ, W3EKT, K3MM+ YL, WD3A, N3YDT, NE3H, W8ZA,
W3KHZ, N3VOP, K3CTR, W3LPL, K2PLF, AND W3WC.
Ed, K3IXD, opened the meeting with the reminder to submit
CQWW scores to CQ, the SS scores to ARRL, and to send a
summary to W2GG.
For ARRL contests, W2GG has to send ARRL a list of
participating club members. In response to a question, he
reminded members that they could purchase a PVRC name badge
from N3OC. He announced that there will be no December NW
Region meeting and urged attendance at the annual PVRC
Holiday dinner/meeting on Monday, 11 December 2000.
The attendees voted into PRVC membership: K3CTR, Gene; and
N3VOP, Mike. K3CTR is a newly licensed ham but been
interested since college. N3VOP has been active for four
years and many may have worked him in the VHF contests.
Around the table:
I didn't record the claimed contest scores; they are
available through W2GG's frequent packet and PVRC reflector
postings as well as in the Newsletter.
K3IXD, Ed: He got off to a slow start in SS-phone. After two
QSOs the rig would not key. He replaced the batteries in the
voice keyer, then changed headsets, and then the foot
switch. It was the foot switch. Then about an hour into the
contest he discovered the computer clock was still on ET not
GMT.
W3ZZ, Gene: He operated CQWW phone at W3GNQ. They were M-S.
Gene didn't operate in SS, no HF working antennas.
W3EKT, Ed: He has his TA-33 back up on the AB-577 at 50
feet. He was in SS-phone.
K3MM, Ty: He attended with his daughter. He was in SS phone
from home and did an informal competition with W2GG, who was
at W3LPL, and edged him out by approximately 50 QSOs. In SS
phone he found the lower 20m antenna was best, the signals
were coming in at a high angle. He will be at W3LPL for
CQWW-CW.
WD3A, Tom: He was at W8ZA for CQWW-phone. He really missed
the usual fire drill of climbing the tower on Saturday.
N3YDT, Jim: Passed.
NE3H, Joe: He was not on for CQWW, instead he played
Grandpa. In SS-phone he missed RI for a clean sweep. He is
pleased with his new Force 12 antennas. W8ZA, Bob: He now
has a second M2 rotor. For CQWW-phone, WD3A, K8OQL, and
K3DNE joined him. For SS-CW K8OQL operated the station. No
one accepted his offer to operate at his station in
SS-phone, so he did dabble a little. He will have a
multi-op team for CQWW-CW.
W3KHZ, Art: He is looking for a contest logger program.
N3VOP, Mike: He was at K3PZN (the Carroll County Radio Club
station) for SS-phone.
K3CTR, Gene: He operated CQWW-phone and SS-phone.
W3LPL, Frank: He was on for CQWW-phone. He has a good team
assembled for CQWW-CW. No one operated his station in SS-CW,
W2GG operated it in SS-phone, and most QSOs were on 10m and
80m.
K2PLF, Marty: He was on for CQWW-phone, and SS-phone making
a clean sweep.
W3WC, Dusty: He has a new computer and is wondering if his
DOS RTTY program will still execute. One of his two towers
is still on the ground.
Concluding K3IXD reminded everyone that there will be no NW
Region meeting in December.
CARROLL COUNTY PVRC MEETING MINUTES - 11/18/00 (Sweepstakes
SSB) By Jim Nitzberg WX3B
In attendance: N3SB, WX3F, AK3Z, & N3YIM. Guests: W3JJH,
W3ARS, KB3CAW, N3XLY, N3GQK, N3VOP, & N3JIA
This was an exciting weekend for the PVRC contingent of the
Carroll County area. We opened up the Carroll County
Amateur Radio Club station (K3PZN) for the Sweapsteaks phone
contest. Some equipment was brought in for the contest was
a Yaesu ft-1000MP, Ameritron AL-1200, Heil HC-4 Headset and
MFJ Voice Keyer. Although the tribander had a touch of the
high SWR fever, everything worked reasonably well. Steve
Beckman, N3SB provided the all you can eat friend chicken
dinner. Thanks, Steve.
Clint, W3ARS (formerly KB3BWC) and his daughter absolutely
stole the show! When they came up for air after their run
they were both red-faced with excitement. The action was
immediately intense for both of them they were running as
fast as they could. I could tell this was a new experience
for them and we may have hooked both of them on the joys of
running!
Jeaninne, KB3CAW, and husband Bill, N3XLY made several
contacts from the club station.
I heard Larry, WX3F, from my house. He was nice enough to
give me a contact when I was operating as WX3B from home.
Rich, N3JIA is an expert logger. It is a true talent to
have someone log who actually helps you run!
Jerry, N3GQK also helped log during Steve Beckmans first
run.
Joe, N3YIM got temporarily baffled by a station problem, but
resumed working stations after the problem was resolved.
I didn't get to see Mike, N3VOP in action, but I have heard
him on the VHF bands and look forward to hearing him in
future contests! Mike once you've started on HF contesting,
you're going to be hooked.
John, W3JJH is just about ready to upgrade and we have high
hopes for him in the future. John has a professional radio
voice, from years of his on the real radio experience.
Steve Beckman wins the award for the highest 10 minute rate.
While he was averaging about 100/hour; his rate meter hit
185 for one 10 minute period at the end of the contest.
Our results? About 15 hours of operation, 700 contacts and
a clean sweep. Not bad for operating only half of the
contest! Keep your ears out for K3PZN in the future and
please spot us. Our club score goes 100% to PVRC! Thanks
to all who participated in this event who made it a great
time.

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR
Here is a hint if you intend on changing your internet
service provider but are concerned about missing mail after
the old account is closed. In July, two days before my
account expired, I had all mail forwarded to my new email
address. The old ISP blocked my sign on but left the mail
forwarding intact. The flip side is SPAM mail is forwarded.
If you use older contest software that does not output in
Cabrillo format, there is plenty of help available. Jim
Price, WW4M has volunteered to convert your log file into
the Cabrillo format. Bill Klocko, N3WK has written and
program that will convert a CT6.26 in a Cabrillo file.
Also, I (K3DI) will be glad to write software that will
convert any text file log into a Cabrillo log and then show
you what header info is needed to be typed in. You've done
the work to work the contest so please seek help if needed
to get the log submitted.
Logs to the ARRL must now be in the Cabrillo format. The
League's web site gives a reference for complete info at
http://www.kkn.net/~trey/cabrillo
Topics at that site are summary sheet, discussion of the
format, QSO templates for several contests, history of
changes, and a FAQ.
A thank you to Bob, W2GG for his fine article to push the
160 and 10 meter contests. I am sorry that I wasn't able to
get this to the printer before 11/27.
